RICKY GERVAIS is DEADLY SIRIUS #05

Humor

Episode 5 - Ricky chats with Sean McLoughlin and Robin Ince
The fifth episode of Ricky's new series of radio shows on Sirius XM
Ricky Gervais is Deadly Sirius: Ricky with comedian chums and eminent guests discussing the big issues. Entertaining, thought-provoking, and often taboo-crunching chat about ethics, science and art; interspersed with utter bollocks and the greatest songs of all time.

I love Ricky Gervais - he's one of the naturally funniest people in the world, BUT..... ...Why does he constantly feel the need to convince everyone that he is right and wonderful? He is constantly using himself and his comedy as a shining example of how to do things completely correctly. Those who question him are wrong, without fail. I wonder where this insecurity comes from..? He obviously doesn't feel he's earnt the right to be a 'standup'. I wish he'd relax, regain his humility, and just be himself. Either that or just stop trying to talk about serious things. He's so gloriously, life-affirmingly funny when he lets himself be childish and 'wrong'.

Jesus what a pretentious pleb Ricky has become. He clings onto "liberalism" because he thinks the media establishment will love him for it but he's too isolated to realise a large portion of society doesn't relate to that ideology anymore. He has nothing new or insightful to say, a very unfunny boring man. 10 years ago, I never thought the comedy industry would be in such a dreadful state. I hope the days of controversial, establishment challenging stand up return.

A lot of what Ricky Gervais is saying in these podcasts seems very contradictory, almost as though he's not thinking properly about what he's saying but just saying whatever comes into his consciousness at that particular moment so he has an opinion, so he brings some value to the table. I like his work, a huge fan it's just a recent observation. He's like a child looking for recognition, which we all are to some degree...

I have been obsessive with Gervais and his work for a long time now but this series of podcasts is really eye opening to how dislikeable he can be. Guests don’t get a word in, he flip flops his opinion and persona to suit the guest on the show. Merchant is missed! Maybe it’s his work I’ve loved all along!

I like you Ricky and I also like Robin, but could you let your other guest talk a bit more? The Richard Dawkins Episode was already kind of painful to listen to as he hardly got a word out of his mouth over you two chatting away endlessly. It's nice that you are obviously good friends and very vocal with each other, but there seems to be hardly any point in having another guest on if it's just you two talking, no offence to any of you, but it seems pointless.

I think I may have swapped from a huge Ricky Gervais fan to a hater. This entire podcast annoyed me, Ricky insulted iconic British panel shows like QI and Never Mind The Buzzcocks, he preaches philosophy over comedy and how it should be, and yet he has never experienced the grind of performing comedy for a living. I really wish Ricky would get some new anecdotes or talk with some American comedians before he spouts about how you have a responsibility to be thoughtful on stage.

Morrissey - Spent the Day in Bed Lyrics Spent the day in bed, Very happy I did, Yes I spent the day in bed, As the workers stay enslaved, I spent the day in bed, I’m not my type but, I love my bed. And I recommend that you, Stop watching the news, Because the news contrives to frighten you, To make you feel small and alone, To make you feel your mind isn’t your own. I spent the day in bed, It’s a consolation when all my dreams, Are perfectly legal, In sheets for which I paid, I am now laid, And I recommend, To all of my friends that they, Stop watching the news, Because the news contrives to frighten you, To make you feel small and alone, To make you feel your mind isn’t your own. Time, do as I wish (repeats) I spent the day in bed, You can please yourself but, I spent the day in bed, Pillows like pillars, Life ends in death, So there’s nothing wrong with being good to yourself, Be good to yourself for once, No bus, no boss, no rain, no train (repeats) No emasculation. No castration. No highway. Freeway. Motorway. No bus, no boss, no rain, no train (repeats)

I like Ricky but whenever he talks about what stand up comedy "should be" it's so fucking pretentious, as long as you're making people laugh then it can be anything. Also, this is a man who when he got into stand up, already had a built in audience of millions, who would laugh their dicks off if he just went up on stage and pulled stupid faces for an hour.

Thing is he doesn't have the credentials, he may sell out really fast etc. but as you said it was all with an assumed audience. His disdain of Lenry Henry makes me laugh, now I don't find Lenny Henry funny, but Lenny Henry made a career as a stand up during 80s Britain in a scene known for being racist, he then worked up to be accepted, as a black man, by the establishment. Think Ricky needs to back off him sometimes.

I had suspected for some time that Ricky, in short interviews on American talk shows and longer interviews elsewhere, had started to omit Steve from his career résumé. I gave him the benefit of the doubt for two reasons: 1) I like Ricky and have done for years. I didn't want the suspicion to be proven correct and 2) how could someone reasonably go from "collaboration with Steve Merchant on The Office and Extras, among other things" to "ME ME ME ME" and think nobody will notice? My suspicions were confirmed when Ricky appeared at The Oxford Union a few months ago. He started in on the whole "I made this" and "I did that", consistent with his new stance, wanking on about being an auteur. Then someone asked him a compound question, explicitly asking about re-uniting with Steve and Ricky ignored that part of the question. Now he's on Sirius XM, again going over his career beginnings and surprise surprise, no Steve again. It's really fucking selfish and wrong. His omitting Steve from XFM is fine, up to a point, because he did famously hired Steve because his CV was top of the pile. But after they were booted and made that aborted talk/chat show with Jimmy Carr, it was _Steve_ who went to the BBC for a production course and ended up working on the World Service. If not for Steve, there would have been no Seedy Boss and there would have been no Office. So Ricky can engage in as much career revisionism as he likes, the record shows him as a liar. And those who wish to correct the record will do so. I think it's a cuntish thing he's done.

I think you're missing the point of this show... That has nothing to do with what this is about. That's like saying "I don't like Brad Pitt because he doesn't talk about Gwenyth Paltrow anymore and they dated, so that's really cuntish behaviour of him"

People need to stop commenting “please get Steve and Karl on” both of them are barely on talking terms with Ricky these days so that won’t be happening. Steve due to Ricky’s general attitude these days and the whole “I created the office and here’s my movie version” thing. Karl because He feels they’ve drifted apart and the on the rare occasions they have met he can’t tolerate Ricky like he used to be able to. People might call bullshit on this but none of the 3 boys will.

You're talking bollocks. Karl is accidentally funny, he couldn't sell a world tour. If that was the only reason, Karl would be on the show. Steve said that the reason all 3 split, was because it felt like they were just repeating the same jokes and stories and they were stalling, so they slowly split up and went separate ways. Since then work/life happens and as the slowly talked less they lost touch. Same as how you don't fall out with your school friends, you just slowly lose contact. He also said he was open to working with Ricky again, just atm they are doing different things and styles so it wouldn't work out. Karl didn't want the spotlight and he never has. He refused to be on the XFM poster, didn't want to be on MTV, and without Ricky's convincing rarely wanted to do anything in public. He hates acting, which is why in most of his shows he basically plays himself. Ricky not talking to him because he is jealous, is nonsense.

No, Ricky and Karl both went separate ways, so did Steve. Steve wanted to go to America, Karl wanted to do nothing and Ricky wanted to do more sitcoms and acting and that. If the three get back together it wouldn't be as good as before. Better leave the original content so it isn't ruined like movie re-makes.

Jake Wallwork I reckon it’s Louis CK. He was getting bigger and bigger before ‘Lucky Louie’ (he was well respected for years before then of course, but not mega successful), but then that flopped and was cancelled. He still retained his loyal fan base after that show, but it was a few years before he started once again to get more mainstream traction, TV airtime etc. I’m pretty sure he means CK, in which case it’s a little exaggerated to say it took five years for him to ‘recover’, but it certainly slowed down his evolution from a well respected ‘comic’s comic’ with a cult following, into one of the most successful and adored American comedians of a generation - recent events put aside, of course 👀

The internet was once a great thing. Then the timid. The weak. The afraid. They found their way on. Finally they felt brave enough to venture onto the wild wild w'internet (had to have a WWW pun, joke, what ever) and the cunts ruined it for everyone with their hard done by attitude. Instead of using the mute or block features they report and get banned normal everyday folk who were doing just fine til they came along.

Honestly Steve had all the smartest lines on the radio show too. All Ricky did was utilize his overbearing laughter and name.

The Milk Cult of Sisyphus Well I don't believe you cos you're completely wrong. What about the routine on homosexuality in animals or the Noah's Ark children's book?
