Why Do Motorcycle Riders Brag About "Freedom"?

Motor

Everyone knows that "Motorcycle" is synonymous with "Freedom" ... but why? Motorbikes have the same dynamics as bicycles and go to the same places as cars - what's so free about that?

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: frt9.co/pki2ox
Fair warning - this is a challenging read. Asking what makes freedom "free" is child's play compared to Pirsig's query: what makes good "good"? Fascinating!

people who hitch hike or ride a bus feel a lot more free than bikers.....I ride motorcycles but I never think that's synonimous with freedom. When you have to push it after it suffers a puncture, when it doesn't run because of some mechanical problem, when you have to spend hours and hours doing paper work in customs just to enter another country, when you can't find fuel in the middle of nowhere, etc., etc...that's no freedom!!!

These were very true. You can just hop on a motorcycle in the morning and get off in the evening without touching your phone for the whole day. You didn't even think about it or about any other normaly pressing matters in your life. It was just you, maybe a friend, your bike and the road. That is what the "freedom" motorcyclists talk about is.

It is Not actually Freedom But more so "Aliveness"... Until the Lazy Fuker who doesn't use their side view mirrors or turning their head to LOOK,,, while talking on their mobile phone, dives into your lane and knocks you of your bike!!!

To anyone who lives in a seemingly uninteresting flat state with barely any areas with natural beauty like florida or the part i stay in atleast. Put your phone gps on the way to your next trip on no highway and no tolls and see how many beautiful places you come across and how good it feels not being constantly threatened by the amount of cars that surround you. I’ve done it on almost every trip thats like over an hour ride and the feeling of riding on those rodes is just majestic

With all respect, I find that book overrated. I tried to read it four times. Four. Yes. First in english, then my mother language, then again in English after I learned this language better. No way to get to the end. I reached my conclusions. They are explained in my book that describes a trip across the US north east riding my bike Peace to all

Freedom is also driving in my 4Runner wearing shorts, t-shirt, flip flops when is 100f or 20f outside and snowing. Then napping in the back. A car might be a "cage" but so is a helmet and full suit, body armour, especially in summer. No one ever got a BJ on a motorcycle while driving down the road.

Happy? Just ride. Sad? Just ride. Angry? Just ride (to cool off, not to look for a fight). It might be a cliche, but in travelling on a motorcycle, its always about the journey, not the destination.

Motorcyclists are keenly aware of the risk/reward paradigm every time they throw a leg over a bike. They acutely understand that to feel alive, to be free, one must acknowledge tangible dangers and take them head on. Only through embracing risk in the pursuit of something better, can we ever know what achievement, purpose, or joy feels like. Tell that to someone in the era of COVID.

At 2:15 is when I felt like your words really hit me... Our focus is honed in on the stimulation of riding, with no room for all of the nonsense distractions like FB that we have today. We are one with our bikes, as the bike needs our full attention and physical inputs to control it properly. We are wielding a machine that can outperform supercars at 1/100th of the cost.... And we are experiencing all of this in a REAL moment ourselves in our own lives. Very well said as always RF9.

I think it's mostly because I can go anywhere, faster than most people, and for a fraction of the cost. You'll spend 300-500 on a one-way trip from where I live to visit my family in OKC in a car... or way less on my motorcycle because it gets 55-60mpg.

You've got such a gift for making well thought out and mentally stimulating videos. That segways straight into why many people say that motorcycling is freedom. Compared with driving 4 wheeled vehicles, riding a motorbike is fully engaging. You're in the moment, and involved completely in what you're doing, whilst amongst the elements. No major distractions., and the minor ones have to be kept in check too, or you'll hear that age old story of "had to lay her down", or they'll be blind dating bushes or trees 😅😂

@FortNine Check Fred Feldman's chapter in Rollin, B. E., Pineo, C., Gray, C. M., & Mommer, K. (Eds.). (2006). Harley-Davidson and Philosophy: Full-throttle Aristotle. Open Court Publishing. It delves deeper into your starting argument, but is skeptical of this kind of 'phenomenological' freedom you turn towards :)

Can we talk about the growth in the writing of this channel? This vid is essentially an re-upload of a vlog from a few years ago. Even uses some of the same argumentation. ("Han dynasty peasant," for example.) But holy jumpins, Ryan has grown as a rhetorician. The structure and symmetry of presentation, the use of writing devices and the brash willingness to walk the line between everyman jargon and $10 words. 36 seconds in the video and I was blown away. This channel's writing consistently makes me feel inspired. It's passionate, and educational, too. Not only about motorcycles and the nature of people who make them and ride them, but about the English language itself. I discovered this channel a little over a month ago and watched nearly every video in a span of 7 days, spurred on by the polyamorous marriage of fantastic writing, impactful cinematography, and content that has something to say. It is truly incredible to see the melding of the visions of the F9 director/editor, and its presenter. The camera work is intentional and novel. I sense a spirit of respect and friendship between the two partners, and I love the spirit of collaboration and creativity. Hell, I've even taken to watching these videos before writing an essay for university, because I find them so linguistically rich, they inspire me to go off and compose my own ideas. They've introduced me to so many aspects of motorcycling, from the community, to safety, to combustion engine ins and outs, to where the rubber meets the road with any given cycle they review. -I mean, how cool is it to have a motorcycle review talking about S curves and the nature of beauty? I love that reviews almost always come down to how the cycle will be functionally used. They feel explored, not summarized, shown, not told. And if a Review critique comes down to a cliché, they earn it! They don't just state the cliché, they almost show how the cliché became a cliché by demonstrating it through the bike the happen to be riding. In case there was any doubt to those involved with the making of this show, the effort and tight writing of the F9 NOlocal series pays off. It has earned my views. A catchy headline may have been the reason I first clicked on a video, but great, educational, passionate, art was the reason I kept watching. It is the reason I continue to watch. I'm grateful this for novel little show F9 has allowed to grow here, and the fantastic work of the creative staff over the years. Personally, I hope they keep it up.
